For our latest employee Q&A we chatted to one of our UK based drivers, Gavin Young. Gavin kindly gave us some insight into day-to-day life on the road as a Dixon truck driver.
Q1 – How long have you been driving trucks for and how long have you been a driver with Dixon International?
I have been driving professionally now for a little over 5 years and have been with Dixon international Transport for 6 months.
Q2 – Are you a domestic driver or continental driver and what attracted you to this type of driving?
I am a primarily domestic driver. Working for Dixon International as a domestic driver allows me to come home every night to my family. This is great as I still get the opportunity to be a full time HGV driver while not missing out on my kids growing up.
Q3 – What would a typical week of driving look like for you?
A typical week for me consists of driving the same route daily, starting and finishing at the same time every working day and finishing my day with my family at home.
Q4 – Have you noticed many changes or differences to your routine since Brexit came in?
I personally have not noticed substantial changes from Brexit. I use the port twice daily and never have any issues. The planners at Dixon International are an incredible team and make it easy for us all with having all the correct paperwork ready before I drive to the port.
Q5 – What is your favourite thing about working on the road?
My favourite thing would have to be the peace and quiet on the road. Although I use the same route nearly every day, no two days are the same.
Q6 – If you could take a journey with any person who would it be?
Although he is not keen on truckers, it would have to be Jeremy Clarkson. We share a lot of the same views and the journey would be hilarious.
Q7 – What is your favourite thing to listen to on the road?
I mostly tune in to the local radio station for frequent traffic updates, but if my Spotify is connected, I play mainly Oasis or Foo Fighters.
Q8 – What is the one piece of advice you would offer to new drivers?
The best advice I could give to a new driver would be if you are in doubt about anything stop and ring the team at the office. Secondly, I would say to always be aware, constantly check your surrounding and mirrors.
Q9 – What is your favourite truck to drive?
My favourite truck to drive would have to be a Scania. Dixon International have an incredible high spec fleet. I have been driving the same Scania since my first day and take pride in keeping it clean.
Q10 – Where has been your favourite journey/route while working at Dixon International?
As I drive the same route daily, I do not venture far. Although I do enjoy the A41 and it even has a brilliant chip van for a Friday evening.
Q11 – What do you like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time I enjoy working on old cars with my two sons and preparing them for shows. I also enjoy exploring new places and camping as a family.
